Meijer News: Second Location In Detroit Opens June 11, Third Location On East Side In Early Stages

A few years ago, the talk was Detroit was a food desert with no chain grocery stories. But now, Grand Rapids-based Meijer is not only doubling, but looks like it is tripling down on the city of Detroit.

June 11 (next Thursday) their new store under construction opens on the west side, and will feature 190,000 square feet of space as well as a gas station. It’ll be open at 7 a.m. daily and the exact address is 21431 Grand River Avenue. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is anticipated to attend the opening, as well as other local officials and representatives from the company.

Adding to the Meijer news, there are reports and our sources tell us that there will be a third Meijer store, this time on the east side of the city, between downtown Detroit and Grosse Pointe. If there’s any corridor well-suited for suburban-style development, it’s Jefferson with its large swaths of open land.

The first Meijer in the city opened two years ago at the Gateway Marketplace, a $72 million development of which $20 million was comprised by the Meijer.

Per usual with projects of this size in the city, significant development incentives from the State and City were part of the Gateway Marketplace and the Grand River store, so there’s no reason to think there won’t be with the new east side location.
