Happy weekend to you all. I can not believe that we are already half way done with the month of May.

We’ve got a lot of great events happening this weekend, so let’s get started.

Don Giovanni – Detroit

I had to include this event on this week’s City 5 because it combines two of my favorite things; Mozart’s Don Giovanni and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The cast will perform Don Giovanni as the characters from Rocky Horror.

I know it sounds kind of crazy, but hear me out. Opera MODO is known to take operatic pieces an put them in unusual and contemporary settings to make opera more accessible to people.

Don Giovanni is one of the best operas ever written, so if you have the chance you should really see it.

You will be able to see Don Giovanni on through the weekend, May 18 through May 20. The performance starts at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the opera are $27 or $15 for students with an id.

The Carr Center is located at 311 East Grand River Detroit, Michigan 48226

Spring into Corktown – Detroit

We did a whole post on this event Saturday over here. Runs all day in, you guessed it, Corktown.

Salsa, Sangria, and Swing – Detroit

One of my favorite neighborhoods in Detroit is Palmer Woods, if I had unlimited funds I would buy a house in Palmer Woods. Alas, I’m a writer so I don’t think that is going to happen anytime soon.

While I might not be able to afford to buy a house there, I can afford to pick up few tickets to Palmer Woods Music in Homes on Saturday. These monthly events are organized by the Palmer Woods Association and Creative Arts Collective.

Orquesta La Inspiracion will be performing a concert in the garden of one of the historic homes in Palmer Woods on Saturday, May 20.

Before the show guests will be able to take a tour of the 1938 English Tudor which was designed by C. Howard Crane. Crane also designed Orchestra Hall, Fox Theatre, Fillmore Detroit, Michigan Opera Theatre.

The evening will also include dinner, which will be served during intermission. The concert begins at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets for the event can be purchased online or by calling 313-891-2514. Tickets are $40 per person. The address will be revealed after you purchase your ticket.

Eastern Market Flower Day – Detroit

This Sunday is the 51st anniversary of the Eastern Market Flower Day. This is a time honored tradition of those who live throughout  Metro Detroit.

If you plan on going to Flower Day I suggest getting there early, because it can get pretty crowded. Plus you will get the best variety of flowers and plants.

If you don’t have a wagon to carry your flats of plants there will be carts to rent by the hour from C& L Sales.

I was at DeVries & Co 1887 in Eastern Market this morning and I saw the poster that Ouizi designed for this years market. You can pick one up for $10 in Shed 5. They also have shirts for sale for $20.

Don’t forget to check out some of the other shops throughout Eastern Market.

Hours: 7:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Eastern Market is located on Russell Street in Detroit.

Stroh’s Legend Run – Detroit

Do you like to run 5k’s and Stroh’s? Then you should really sign up for this run on Sunday.

The 5k will take you through Corktown and part of Downtown. At the end of the race those who are over 21 will receive a pint of Stroh’s to celebrate.

Runners will also receive a Stroh’s Legend Run shirt, bottle opener, koozie, and a finisher medal.

Admission for the race is currently $44 until May 18, and then it goes up to $46 until the day of the run.

Online registration is open until May 19, however you can do same day registration on Sunday, May 21.

It’s time to get your monthly injection of rare soul and funk music over at The Marble Bar on Saturday night.

Go tell Dan Austin we said hi. He will be one of four DJ’s spinning throughout the evening. The other three DJ’s for the evening are Brad Hales, Erica Aytes, and special guest Adam Stanfel.

There is never a cover for Motor City Soul Stomp, so get there early before it gets too crowded.
