It’s not very often that you see Jewish cuisine fused with Filipino food, however on Monday, April 24 there will be a collaborative pop up with Sarap Detroit and chef Aaron Egan.

The collaboration started after Sarap chef Jake Williams learned that 1,200 European Jews ended up in the Philippines during World War II.

Chef Williams approached chef Egan with the idea to collaborate on the pop up.

“Jewish and Filipino cuisines may seem like an unlikely pairing, but it’s a perfect collaboration to highlight the shared experiences of both communities,” says Dorothy Hernandez, who co-owns Sarap with chef Jake Williams. “Both Filipino and Jewish people have left their homelands in search of a better life for their families and scattered around the world, bringing their cultures, values and cuisines to wherever they settled.”

The menu was created months ago through an evening of brainstorming on what Jewish and Filipino food would look like together. The trio cooked the dishes in Williams and Hernandez’s kitchen to give the menu a test run.

Let’s check out the menu.

First course: Kare Kare with Lamb shoulder, eggplant, kasha, green beans

Second: “Borscht”with Beets, coconut milk, cilantro oil, sprouts

Third: Adobo Schnitzel with Chicken, ube spaetzle, gribnes, calamansi coconut “beurre blanc”

Fourth: Cholent Bulalo with Braised beef, bone marrow, rice, beans, bok choy, sour gravy

Fifth: Turon with Jackfruit, banana, crispy rice wrapper, coconut caramel, sesame seeds

The five course dinner will be $50 per person, you can purchase tickets on the Sarap Detroit website.

There are limited seats left for the 6 p.m. seating. If and when they sell out they will add a second seating for 8:30 p.m.
