Hey freinds, Jer here.

I had a great time visiting the Indian Village Garage Sale over the weekend. Started with a tasty breakfast at the recently-opened Norm's Diner over on Agnes, just east of Van Dyke. Highly recommend.

People from all over the region came out to check out the wares and the huge houses. I came away with nothing, but my partner? An armful of beautiful vintage bracelets.

But I noticed something that just didn't feel right. And I've been going to Indian Village for awhile — my grandma lived in the neighborhood when I was a kid.

Too many New York Yankees hats. Of different colors. It was like something out of a high-end fashion store.

To me, unless you grew up with a Derek Jeter baseball bat rattle, took the subway to get to Yankee Stadium, or can roll off the stats of Joltin' Joe DiMaggio? The Yankees are our rivals.

The Tigers are a great team this year. Have some hometown pride.

If New York is your hometown team, cool. Hometown pass.

But as a fashion statement? I'd rather wear the old english "D" in my opinion. Even if you're not into baseball, I think it's respect on our name if you're here. And put that Yankees hat from Aritzia or whatever back on the rack.

Fletcher Sharpe didn't totally agree with me — and we talked about it on our latest podcast episode (along with three reasons why the Tigers are winning).

💥 Did you know that there are tons of connections between Detroit and some of the most well-known comic characters? A new exhibit, Heroes vs. Villains at the Detroit Historical Museum, dives into that story. I talked with the curators and learned a ton about everything from The Simpsons to Marvel. You will, too. 🏛️ There's yet another Democratic U.S. Senate candidate: Former Michigan House speaker Joe Tate. He joins what's shaping up to be a crowded race including former Wayne County health director (and previous candidate for Governor) Abdul El-Sayed, State Senator Mallory McMorrow, and U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens. [Detroit One Million]

🗳️ Meanwhile, current Rep. Rashida Tlaib is endorsing a primary challenger (state Rep. Donavan McKinney) in her neighboring district to fellow Democrat Rep. Shri Thanadar. [Metro Times]

💸 Michigan Senate Democrats propose a budget shake-up that could reshape the state's economic landscape. The proposal aims to help businesses affected by tariffs while reducing funding for programs like Pure Michigan, brownfield redevelopment, historic projects, and tech startups. [Crain’s Detroit Business]

It’s seen as a rebuke by her own party of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s economic strategy — and would cut funding to the kinds of projects we often mention in this newsletter.

Good to go

p.s. For some reason, I was thinking about Mayer Hawthorne this week. From Ann Arbor, he had a big breakout some years ago. His "A Long Time" music video was great with clips from the legendary New Dance Show. IYKYK.

Nowadays, he's also part of a project called "Tuxedo," which I'd describe in the same musical neighborhood as stuff like Chromeo, but a bit more chill.

In their most recent album, I'd go with Cake. Also, try their funk interpolation of Snoop Dogg's "Ain't No One" called "Number One." It has clean lyrics.
