Hey friends,
Hope your weekend was restful. It seemed like things were hopping with new energy over the holiday, and I found myself out and about checking out some of Detroit's newest things. Read on to learn more about them.
Two quick things before we get started:
- Forward this email to a friend! Word of mouth is the best way to push Detroit's conversation forward. If you find this valuable, let others know about it. If this is your first time here, sign up free.
- For a final time, I'm asking for your thoughts through our super-short community survey about the newsletter. Three questions, a minute or two of your time, and the feedback will help the project go forward; as well as refine the kinds of things we cover in this space.

🌹 Rose's is back open on East Jefferson! I went to the soft opening over the weekend (on our own dime) and I can best describe owner Molly Mitchell's menu as inspired and elevated Polish food. And it was good.

The Braised Cabbage Lasagna was excellent. It's almost as if a cousin of Golumpki went on an Italian holiday and came home with some new ideas.

The Kopytka was solid. And take a minute to appreciate the Zucchini.

I was big fan of both the local tomato appetizer...

... and the toasted sourdough had this dreamy spread with dill, caraway, and garlic butter.
And finished it up splitting a Dark Chocolate Mousse with cherry, poppyseed and a rose whip that was inspirational.
As someone who remembers back when Elmo's Diner was there as a kid in the same building (the post office across the street is where I'd drop off letters with my grandma back in the 80s and 90s), I love seeing activity here.
It takes time for me to put any new or re-opened place on our elite list of "Driveworthy Destinations," but this could be a contender for it.
You'll find it open Wednesday through Sundays, 4pm-10pm at 10551 E. Jefferson in Detroit. [Instagram]

☕️ I also went to a new, out-of-this world coffee spot.
Saturn Coffee launched over the weekend at 700 Seward, between Woodward and the Lodge.

The design of the interior is stylish and modern.
It was bit late in the morning so I came away without one of the biscuits some friends were raving about. Sad for me. But overall, the experience was good and fast.

I have always loved seeing the energy of a street like Seward. We don't have many in the city with this many active apartment buildings mixed in with other housing.

It creates a vibrancy that normally I've seen in a more population dense place like Chicago. I wish the city had more neighborhoods like this, and reminds me of when the city proper had far closer to a million people living here.
Saturn Coffee is open seven days a week. Monday through Friday, they kick it off early at 6:30a (honestly, around here, there's not many shops open that early so it'll immediately make it an option for me) and at 8a on weekends... while always closing at 3p. [Instagram]
🎬 Mark your calendars for a screening of a new movie that focuses on building Detroit up, starting from the residents. Longtime local filmmaker Stephen McGee and producer Jessica Care Moore are presenting "Resurgo" at the Wendell W. Anderson Jr. Auditorium in Detroit. Event is at 7p on September 9. This is part of the Detroit Month of Design. Tickets for purchase here.
🛶 Shout-out to Fletcher Sharpe whose team representing Whiskey in the Jar won the whimsical Hamtramck Yacht Club Canoe Races. We're proud of you and the friends of the show involved at Whiskey for winning a race that doesn't matter. We talked about it on the podcast on Monday.
That's all for now. Thanks to our members on Patreon for their support.
