The nonprofit group Friends of the Rouge needs volunteers to help with the annual cleanup of the Rouge River.

This year’s Rouge Rescue event takes place Saturday, May 18. Volunteers are needed to help remove trash and invasive plants, maintain land and water trails and plant native wildflowers.

Volunteers at last year’s event cleared the equivalent of 24 pickup trucks worth of debris and about 78 pickup trucks full of invasive plants. They also planted some 2,000 native plants and trees.

There’s no restriction on ages, but volunteers should expect to get dirty and possibly wet.

There are cleanup sites this year at 40 locations in 17 different communities, with additional work days scheduled at certain locations through late June.
