Hey friends, Jer here.

Sorry the last note had some typos. It being later in the evening is no excuse, but at least you know it's not written by A.I.!

Anyway, a bit of housekeeping - we've enabled one-time payments for membership to Daily Detroit. So if that's the reason you didn't support our thing before, support the thing! Local media requires local support. You'll get swag, early release editions of the podcast and access to our member-only Discord.

And this is our last call for our Spring Survey about the project. Your feedback is valuable and helps grow what we're doing, sharing what to know and where to go in Southeast Michigan.

Onward!

New stuff

β˜•οΈ You can help a coffee shop in Southwest Detroit get off the ground. The Southwest Detroit Business Association has campaign to build out a cooperative kitchen, cafe space, and community hub within La Joya Gardens, with every donation being matched by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Local residents Meli and Eduardo are behind the Cafe Clark concept, bringing their experience in food service and operations to create a welcoming coffee shop that draws inspiration from their Mexican heritage. [Patronicity]

Unrelated but nearby... Who remembers Cafe Con Leche by Clark Park? That place was great. βœ‹

This week, Mariners Inn cut the ribbon on "The Anchor" β€” a $26 million substance abuse treatment facility. The 65,500-square-foot center at Cass an Ledyard in The District Detroit is the first time in Mariners Inn's century-long history that they're opening their doors to women, while doubling their overall capacity.

The Anchor has 40 furnished apartments for treatment residents and 44 permanent supportive housing units.

It has private counseling spaces, an in-house medical and mental health clinic, a computer lab, and exercise space. It's all about creating a 360-degree approach to recovery.

The project got funding from city, state, and private sources β€” and it's already operating at full capacity since opening March 1st.

πŸ»β€β„οΈ The Detroit Zoo welcomed Haley, a 22-year-old polar bear from Memphis Zoo, joining resident bears Nuka and Suka. She'll live in the Arctic Ring of Life, one of the largest polar bear habitats in North America. It has four acres of state-of-the-art outdoor and indoor spaces β€” including a 70-foot-long glass tunnel, exploration station and ice cave. If you haven’t been.. I think you otter go. (Yes, there are otters, and yes, that was a pun).

⛲️ Fountain funding: Detroit City Council approved a $421k contract for engineering services to bring back to life the Merrill Fountain in Detroit's Palmer Park. It was designed by the same firm that did the New York Public Library. It was originally was located downtown. [Axios Detroit]

🍺 Detroit's First Black-Owned Brewery is opening at 666 Selden Street, and the soft launch is this weekend. Roar Brewing Co. was founded by Evan Fay, a U.S. Air Force veteran.

They promise approachable craft beers, including their flagship Honey Oat Stout, in a welcoming atmosphere that celebrates Detroit's roaring spirit.

There will be interactive tours, an outdoor plaza, and regular music, entertainment and social events.

That soft open is Sunday afternoon during The Nain Rouge parade, and a grand opening is planned for sometime this summer.

A pro tip: If you've never been to a "soft" event, as a rule β€” not just with this place, but any place β€” be gentle. They're still figuring things out.

On the podcast

I really wasn't ready for what I walked into 🀣

🌽 Corn on the Corner in Dearborn has a wild, club-like bathroom that you wouldn't expect at a fast casual restaurant. We talked about one of Devon's favorite spots, as well our trips around Dearborn and to Lansing. Apple Podcasts | Spotify

πŸ“ž On the Thursday edition of the podcast (You can watch with our faces above!) we talked about how Norris is proud to have his 313 number, if Wayne State should consider more (reasonably priced) housing options to help boost up the number of residents in Midtown, and more. Don't forget to take the Spring Survey! We'd love to hear from you.

Until next time, remember that you are somebody β€” and I'll see you around Detroit.

-Jer

p.s. - My track heading into the weekend is a little is a nod to my love of party music. I'm kind of obsessed with the Book Club YouTube channel, and this mix on an NYC rooftop of The White Stripes Seven Nation Army is quite good. The transition into a version of "Don't Fear The Reaper" is choice, too.

p.p.s. - If anyone wants to help me make cool ambient stuff like this but locally, lemme know. dailydetroit - at - gmail - dot - com.
