Hello, hello, hello! How has the first full week of January been for you? School is now back in session, which is great because we were all getting a bit of cabin fever in our house.

This weekend has a lot of fun things happening around the city. I know I’m looking forward to hitting a few of these events. Let’s get this show on the road shall we?

Film Cult: Barbarella Queen of the Galaxy

On Friday night the Art of Armageddon Beach Party in Woodbridge will be partnering with Film Cult to bring you all a screening of Barbarella Queen of the Galaxy.

This cult classic featuring the one and only Jane Fonda is turning 50 years old this year. Can you believe it? I know I can’t.

Anyway, in addition to the film there will be music by Freakuency.

There is a suggested donation of $5 per person to check out the film. You can find out more information here.

When: Friday, January 11 doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the film starts at 9:00 p.m.

Motown 60th Anniversary Celebration

On Saturday, January 12 the Detroit Historical Museum will be celebrating the sound of Motown as the recording company turns 60 years old.

The museum will be showing a film about Motown’s greatest artists during the event. There will also be a Motown themed scavenger hunt and a chance for you to make your own microphone.

This is a family friendly event and admission is free. Don’t forget to check out the rest of the museum, there are some great exhibitions there.

Saturday, January 12 from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

The Detroit Historical Museum is located at 5401 Woodward Detroit, Michigan 48202

One Last Pump!

If you frequented the Town Pump downtown, you might want to head there this Saturday. It will be your last chance to grab a drink here because the Town Pump will be closing after 22 years.

Don’t fret, the owners plan on reopening where Centaur Bar use to be located sometime in early 2019. But for the space located inside the Park Avenue House building it will be the last hurrah.

Saturday, January 12 from 4:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.

The Town Pump is located at 100 W Montcalm Street Detroit, Michigan 48201

Thirst Wave David Bowie Tribute Night

Yep, I’m bringing you more Bowie this weekend. Can you blame me? Tuesday, January 8th would have been his birthday and Thursday, January 10th is the day he passed away.

If you want to honor the legacy of David Bowie I’m going to send you over to Small’s in Hamtramck. DJ Pleasure Kitten, DJ Aaron Hingst and special guest DJ Slofu (Happy Endings) will be spinning New Wave, Retro Alternative, Dark ’80s, ’90s Alternative music all night. Plus there will also be curated musical tributes to David Bowie that will be played throughout the night.

Want to dress up like your favorite version of Bowie? That will make this tribute even better.

If you are over 21 there is no cover charge if you get there before 10:00 p.m., if you get there later it is only $5 bucks. If you are under 21 you can get in for $5 all night.

Saturday, January 12 from 9:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m.

Small’s is located at 10339 Conant Street Hamtramck, Michigan 48212

-Saturday Bonus-

It might be a new year, but the Motor City Soul Stomp is still happening one Saturday night a month. Head over to the Marble Bar for some of the best rare Northern Soul and Funk from the 1960’s and 1970’s. You can find all of the details here.

The Art of the Hat- Trunk Show and Chat With Gena Conti

I love a good hat. I’m not talking a baseball cap or beanie — I’m talking a fancy hat that a woman might have worn in the early 1900’s. Millinery has always been fascinating to me. I’m going to blame Irene Malloy in Hello Dolly. Her hat shop was amazing. I digress.

If you want to get geeky about hats then I suggest heading over to the Peacock Room in the Fisher Building for this fireside chat with Gena Conti. She owns a millinery shop in Wyandotte and she makes beautiful hats.

Come for the chat but stay and try on some hats. The Kentucky Derby is coming up in a few months, so it’s time to buy a new hat for those Derby Parties.

This event is free to attend.

Sunday, January 13 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

The Fisher Building is located at 3011 West Grand Boulevard Detroit, Michigan 48202
