In a town known for coneys and pizza, meatless eating is also a thing in Detroit.

In fact, in 2016, PETA called out Metro Detroit for being one of the top vegan eating destinations in the nation. 

A restaurant that uses no animal products — GreenSpace — is expanding beyond their downtown Ferndale flagship into the fast casual space, but there will be no chicken, no beef, and no shrimp on this menu. Heck, no traditional cheese either (that’s an animal product, after all).

“‘Fast food’ and ‘healthy’ rarely occur in the same sentence, but that’s what we’re bringing to this busy stretch of Woodward,” says cardiologist Joel Kahn M.D., who co-owns GreenSpace Cafe with his son, Daniel, and wife, Karen.

Interesting fact? Dr. Kahn was named “Sexiest Male Vegan over 50” by PETA in 2016, among other plaudits.

The menu will focus on veggies, fruits, grains and beans in burgers, bowls, tacos, salads, baked goods, raw juices and more. According to GreenSpace, their ingredients are sourced as “wholly, sustainably and organically as possible and contain no GMOs or preservatives.”

The new spot is going into the old Moe’s Southwest Grill at 32867 Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak, just south of 14 Mile Road. They expect it’ll open early in 2018.
