Hey friends, Jer here.
When I last wrote to you about Marrow in the Market back in August of last year, there was a long way to go. People were at work, but there was a lot of vision to fill in.
As of tonight, the spot at 2442 Riopelle the "Butcher's Brasserie" is now open. Let's take a first look inside.
Let's start out on the street.

The building is more than a hundred years old — the first floor was constructed in 1906, and the second story 1916. These bricks have seen a lot over the years, and I'd argue they haven't looked better in a century. You can see a mural in progress on the wall facing where the freeway ramp merges into Gratiot.

I first entered the 14,000 square foot space by the bar that has ample room. I also appreciate that it's in a shape where patrons can see each other. The community and conviviality is one of the big reasons to go out in the first place.

The Ron Signs sign is a nice touch, a nod to the city's airbrushed style that has been part of our landscape since 1978. If you don't know about Ron MIller, now you do.

The butcher shop portion has a variety of meats and accoutrements.

It'll be pretty neat to be able to just pull up, grab a few things, and go. If you didn't know, Marrow also has consumer goods that you'll find in some grocery stories but also at their shops in West Village and Birmingham.

You'll also be able to pick up a sandwich.

“At Marrow, our mission is to nourish our community with exceptional food, responsibly sourced meat, and meaningful hospitality,” said Ping Ho of Marrow Hospitality Group. “From the plate to the butcher counter to the events we host, we strive to create experiences rooted in purpose, connection, and care. Marrow in the Market is designed to be a national showcase offering something wholly unique - a restaurant on top of a working meat plant.”

That meat plant will make raw cuts and specialty items, plus serve as a research and development center for new products.

Heading upstairs, there are a pair of spaces in the front and a private one tucked away in the back.

One thing I love is how the space sits within the city. You're in what feels like a vibrant, urban streetscape; not isolated from it. A true "big city" feel.

And in a two-tiered room in the back there's space to get ready for a wedding, have a corporate board retreat and eat, or whatever else you can think of.

As far as the space goes? I'm very impressed. Riopelle is coursing with life now, and this just adds to it. I've had a few different Marrow meals over the years, and I'll report back after I had a proper chance to sit down and try what's on offer.

🎧 There's a new episode of the podcast tomorrow with Devon O'Reilly talking about the RenCen plans, the new Timberland store on Woodward, a giant bear, and more. Don't forget to follow us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to shows.
My dog is recovering from surgery (she's fine, but high as a kite) so I'm cutting this one short and getting her cheese and medication ready.
In that spirit, tonight's track is "She's So High" by Tal Bachman. Fellow geriatric millennials can hear the bars before they even hit the link.
Until next time,
-Jer
