Michigan Central tickets sell out // Handle the basics if you want to win

Interesting show of Metro Detroit stories today. In the fun category, recently a listener asked why Norris Howard isn't the Baron of Brightmoor, because of the alliteration. He explains why he's the Prince. There was so much demand for Michigan Central's big concert that it sold out - and so have all the tickets for the tour since we recorded this episode and posted. So I won't include that link. Then we get into the race for U.S. House, where Adam Hollier didn't get enough valid signatures to...

REPORTS: Ford May Buy Michigan Central Station.. Or It Might Be A Tenant In It

Ford’s first cars were built in the city of Detroit, in a garage over on Bagley street where the Michigan Building now stands. Recently, the automaker that has for years has made Dearborn their home is again putting money back in the city of Detroit. The possible deal would open a new chapter for the 1913 Beaux Arts building and will change the Corktown neighborhood, adding what could be a thousand employees to what’s been one of the hottest residential neighborhoods in the city. As of thi...

Historic Train Station Site Could Be New Jail Location In One Of Detroit's Hottest Neighborhoods

If the stars align for three powerful forces in the Detroit scene, the new criminal justice complex for Wayne County might just be Michigan Central Station. There have been piecemeal rumors around town, but it’s been taken to another level as it was made public by Detroit News editor Nolan Finley on Sunday. I can’t say for sure how serious the idea is. But I heard the same thing from several people last week: Discussions are underway with the county, city of Detroit and Matty Moroun, the bil...

WATCH: New Batman vs Superman trailer features shots of Detroit, Michigan State

Last night, the world got its first glimpse of the new Batman vs Superman film, which will be released in theaters on March 25th, 2016. As you may recall, a good chunk of the filming was done in the city proper and surrounding areas, and the trailer features a couple moments that are unmistakably Detroit. The most noticeable of the bunch comes in at about 2 minutes and 20 seconds when one of the city’s most recognizable land marks, Michigan Central Station, serves as the backdrop when the fi...

GIF THE NEWS: Detroit Loses Its Mind Over New Windows In Old Train Station

We’re just as guilty as anyone of being the folks who get pumped over something good happening in the city. But as we were at the office and talking to our friends over at IT in the D, we couldn’t help but start having some laughs over a recent AP story that has gotten Detroit abuzz about new windows in the historic Michigan Central Station. We reported this development awhile ago, but also, we can laugh at ourselves and the absurdity of it all. Here was the perfect opportunity (or window, if...

LOOK: Close-Up On Michigan Central Station's New Windows

Recently, more windows have appeared near the top of the historic Michigan Central Station. More than 1,000 have been promised for a long time, but some of them are finally here. We snapped some shots earlier today. Today is the eve of a vote in front of the Detroit City Council in regard to a land swap deal of park land next to the Ambassador Bridge that’s controversial to many who live in the area. A little background on Michigan Central Station. The building is on the National Regis...

Agreement Paves Way For Large Expansion of Detroit’s Riverside Park And Room For Maroun's Bridge

The City of Detroit and the Ambassador Bridge Company have struck and agreement that would enable expansion and improvements to Riverside Park and the exterior of Michigan Central Depot. If the agreement is approved by Detroit City Council, the Ambassador Bridge Co. would transfer 4.8 acres of waterfront property to the city. This transfer will allow the city to expand Riverside Park to the west. The Bridge Co. would also pay the city $3 million to be invested in Riverside Park improvements....

Michigan Central Station To Get More Than 1,000 New Windows

It looks like there may be progress ahead on one of Detroit’s most iconic eyesores. Michigan Central Station, closed since 1988, has become a windowless hulk overlooking a burgeoning Corktown neighborhood. Whereas in the past windows would randomly appear, this news comes from a release from St. Clair-based Chamberlain Glass & Metal Inc. that tells of the plans. However, as often the case with Maroun projects, there is no cost shared or timetable given. The contractor and building owner have...

Can Michigan Central Station Be Brought Back? Yes It Can, Kansas City Already Figured It Out (PICS)

If there is any doubt that the Michigan Central Station can be brought back to life, here lies an example of a city that’s already made something like that happen. There is another Beaux Arts train station in Kansas City, Missouri that has made a comeback as a multi-use entertainment complex with shopping, movie theaters, traveling Smithsonian exhibits, a science museum, bike sharing rentals AND a working Amtrak stop that handled more than 160,000 passengers last year. It’s like every place-ma...

PICS: Tour de Troit shows how fun Detroit can be by bike

In 1999, during the first Tour de Troit, 30 people attended. Last Saturday, more 7,000 riders biked together for the 13th annual Tour de Troit, an event held to promote healthy living and infrastructure for non-motorized transportation in Detroit. The ride began at 9 a.m. at Roosevelt Park, in front of the Michigan Central Train Depot in Corktown, while an epic 62 mile race started earlier in the day. The route took riders all around Detroit, from Corktown to New Center, over to Belle Isle and D...
