Is It Time For Toll Roads In Michigan?

So let’s be clear. I don’t like toll roads. The idea feels strange in the state that put the world on wheels. But we need to get real about what’s facing us when it comes to road funding, and everything should be on the table. Our Detroit region is sprawling. The other week while reporting on a story in Macomb, I realized looking at Google Maps that the driving time from my house in Detroit to the Macomb County Public Works building I was visiting was about the same as if I had drove to...

Dozens Of Detroit Schools Added To State's List For Low Test Scores, But Forced Closure Not A Threat For Now

More than two dozen struggling Detroit schools will likely be added to the state’s “partnership” program after posting years of rock-bottom test scores. That will bring to 50 the number of Detroit schools in the program, which requires schools to meet certain improvement targets or face consequences. Those consequences could include closure or a staff shake-up but, for now at least, decisions about the schools’ fates will rest with local school boards. State officials say they currently have...

Michigan Has The Cheapest Case Of Beer In The Nation

Earlier this week, we shared about how Michigan has the best beer around, with both Bell’s and Founders being ranked as the best breweries. Today is the reason why Michigan is the best beer state. Why? Because not only do we have the best beer, if you’re broke, we also apparently have the cheapest beer. Less than 60 cents a can! That’s according to Simple Thrifty Living. Two Michigan Breweries Were Just Ranked #1 And #2 In America

At one time, Michigan’s license plates read “Winter Wonderland.” Maybe they should come out with a new edition – “Beer Wonderland.” Michigan breweries took two top spots in the Zymurgy Magazine “Best Beers In America” ranking, endorsed by the American Homebrewers Association. Those breweries were Bell’s Brewery out of Comstock and Founders Brewing Company from Grand Rapids. Michigan also took the top spot for beer, with Bell’s Two Hearted coming in at number one. It’s an American IPA that...

Take a look at the new Tesla gallery just a mile from the Detroit auto dealers HQ

Without fanfare or much coverage in the local media, Tesla has opened a new “gallery” to showcase their cars just a mile down Big Beaver from the headquarters of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association (DADA) in the Detroit suburb of Troy. We decided to head up to Somerset Collection (“collection” is the buzzword for a high-end mall) and take a look at the 700 square foot space nestled inside the first level of the Nordstrom store. And the word “nestled” is appropriate. At first glance, if you’...

Michigan's New Public Threat Alert System Can Send Notifications To Your Phone, Interrupt Broadcasts

Building upon the national success of the AMBER Alert system, the state of Michigan now has its own version for what state police call “public threats.” Michigan’s new alert system can be used in cases where there is a public threat, which is defined as “a clear, present, persistent, ongoing and random threat to public safety. A public threat includes, but is not limited to, an act of terrorism, an unresolved mass shooting or an unresolved mass shooting spree.” It works similar to how an AMB...

Michigan Town Named One Of "Best Places To Live" In The U.S.

If you live in and love Michigan, you know one of our best assets is the water. On a recent trip to this town, it was easy to fall in love with the mix of small town feel, historic architecture, and beach access. It was also near parade time, so the town was gearing up for what is clearly a fun event. So it doesn’t come as a surprise – even though we’re biased toward Detroit – that Ludington, Michigan made Outside Magazine’s list of 16 Best Places to live in the United States. The honor wa...

State officials signaled that the number of closures would be that high, based on how many schools have consistently posted test scores in the bottom 5 percent of the state in the pa...

One of the great things about living in Michigan is the natural beauty of our state. Match that with something cool happening in the heavens, and you have a winning combination. You can do that during the upcoming Perseid meteor shower during “Meteors & S’mores” in participating Michigan state parks Aug. 10-13. It’ll be even better if you can travel a little and check it out at a Dark Sky Preserve, of which Michigan has a few. Dark Sky Preserves have protection against light pollution and...

WATCH: Wild Roll Cloud Over Lake Michigan At Sleeping Bear Dunes

Michigan’s natural beauty is something to behold – something you can’t stop watching. This 4x-speed video by Youtube user Nick Nerbonne is less than two minutes long, but well worth it. For background, this is a roll cloud. A roll cloud is a low, horizontal, tube-shaped, and relatively rare type of arcus cloud. Roll clouds usually appear to be “rolling” about a horizontal axis, and are rare. The unique motion is because of the winds changing speed and/or direction at the inversion. That’s wh...
