Compare that to a nine percent increase in all businesses, and women-owned firms are becoming a larger factor in the business sector. Currently, Michigan ranks eighth in the nation in...

Michigan’s Decline, In Three Reports

I love my home state, but sometimes it just exhausts me. Case in point: The woeful condition of our cities. And roads. And schools. But I repeat myself. So this past week was a particularly painful exercise in holding up a mirror to Michigan’s collective failures and depressing, decade-plus slide in prosperity. Let’s review: Monday The week kicked off with the Michigan Municipal League releasing a shocking report that found the Mitten with the dubious distinction of being the only state i...

Debate over wolf population Great Lakes Region is still ongoing

For years, animal advocacy groups in the Great Lakes Region have fought to ensure the place of gray wolves on the US endangered species list. It looks like the fight will continue, though, as a recent letter signed by 26 wildlife scientists has requested that U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and Dan Ashe, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, make the decision to remove the animals from the list. The group of scientists state that while the wolf population nearly disappeared du...

Detroit Ranks As Most Dangerous City In The US For Third Straight Year

Some not so good news for our fair city this morning, and a reminder that although there is progress in some areas there is also a lot of work that needs to be done. According to a recent ranking by lawstreemedia.com, for the third year in a row Detroit is number one among the most dangerous cities in the U.S. with a population of more than 200,000. Law Street’s Crime Team uses the FBI’s four major violent crime categories–murders, aggravated assaults, robberies, and forcible rapes–to create...

What A Rock! Michigan Man Lugs 93 Pound Petoskey Stone Off Beach

The Petoskey stone is beloved here in Michigan. It has been our state stone since 1965, and has an interesting origin as that it’s actually fossilized rugose coral scientists say is from about 350 million years ago (the Devonian Age, for you fellow nerds out there). They say three times is a charm, and it was for rock hunter Tim O’Brien from Copemish to dig it out. But digging it out turned out to be only the beginning. An arduous 114 steps then had to be taken to get it into his pickup truck....

LOOK: Local Photographer Reveals Michigan's Miniature Secret World

By now, you’ve probably noticed the billboards around town flaunting beautiful pictures of distant landscapes with the caption, “Shot on iPhone.” Well, one of Metro Detroit’s own is taking pictures so stunning that she may land herself a billboard deal in the not too distant future. Molly Tamulevich, a big hearted and unapologetic nerd for anthropoids (or bugs for us laymen), has combined her love of photography with these oft neglected miniature creatures of the world, and turned it into an...

Michigan Listed As One Of The Top 5 States For Beer In America

There’s no doubt about it, Michiganders love their brews. And we have good reason to. With such well known options like Bell’s Oberon, Founders or Atwater to the lesser-known like the excellent Ninja Chicken by Falling Down Beer Company or the wonderful small batches Batch Brewing Company produces (along with many other great producers) it’s not a surprise to us where Michigan places on the list at number four, only behind Colorado, California and Oregon. Says Yahoo! Travel/Thrillist: [quo...

Bring Your Beer With You: Pedal Pubs Become Legal In Michigan

Ever seen one of these pedal pub contraptions and thought, “yes, that’ll be fun?” Soon, you’ll be able to hop on and enjoy your hops thanks to a Michigan law signed by Governor Rick Snyder on Wednesday. In Michigan, passengers will be allowed to drink alcohol on pedal-powered vehicles. Local governments still have the discretion to prohibit drinking on them, but the framework is in place for a whole new kind of fun. Pedal pub operators can not be under the influence of alcohol and also need to...

Michigan Is The Best State In America, Says Thrillist

We’re glad someone else realizes something we’ve known for awhile: Michigan is indeed the best state in America. That’s the word from Thrillist.com, the online purveyors of just about every list known to mankind. [quote_box_center]..we thought it was time to use the perfectly American cliche “go big or go home” and rank the states based on everything. More specifically, their contributions to America, so think inventions, food/drink, somewhat productive famous people, unique physical beauty,...
