Report: M1 Rail, New Bridge To Canada On Trump's Infrastructure Priority List

Two major projects that have gotten a lot of headlines are getting some more. Last night, interesting news from McClatchy came out. They’re reporting that two projects in Metro Detroit as well as a third in Michigan are on Donald Trump’s short list of infrastructure priorities. These priorities were apparently gathered from Governor’s offices across the country, who were asked to give 3-5 suggestions each. The projects had to fit four criteria, according to the report: * A national security...

Park or wait in the way of the QLINE? You could face a $650 fee

It’s going to take a little while for people to get used to having a streetcar going up and down Woodward. Even though the tracks are in place, it’s commonplace to see delivery trucks, people standing waiting for people, and other traffic activity people are used to doing on a road that doesn’t have a streetcar. But it looks like people are going to have to learn fast. According to a statement released by M1-Rail, if you park in the way of the streetcar – even in testing phase – you’ll be faci...

Detroit streetcar stations begin to take shape, new rendering released

If you’ve been driving down Woodward in greater downtown Detroit, you may have noticed that there are now platforms and partial shelters sticking out of various places. They’re for the QLINE, Detroit’s new streetcar. On Thursday a new rendering was released for the stations for the streetcar line. They look very modern, with an information screen and a glowing light bar. The stations will be 98-by-12 foot and made of glass and concrete. They will be Wi-Fi enabled, heated and equipped with se...

Installation Of The Track Is Now Complete For Detroit's New Streetcar, Woodward On Schedule To Reopen

Detroit hasn’t had a streetcar in a long, long time. More than half a century. Soon, we’re going to be able to see them going down Detroit’s central street once again. Word this week is that the QLINE reached an important milestone today as construction crews welded the final pieces of rail, completing installation and connection of what is 6.6 miles of track (as it’s technically a 3.3 mile loop) on Woodward Avenue. “Today marks the end of QLINE track construction,” said M-1 RAIL CEO Ma...

After 60 Years, Detroit Has A Streetcar Again (PICS, VIDEO)

If you doubted that the QLINE/M1-Rail was going to happen, it doesn’t get more real than the first streetcar being delivered. Daily Detroit was on hand in New Center as the first of six streetcars arrived near the Penske Tech Center. These are the first full-service streetcars since 1956 (that’s 60 years) to hit the streets of Detroit. There was a limited trolley from Washington Boulevard to the Rencen for awhile. Over the course of a few hours, the streetcar will be unloaded and placed on t...

The First Streetcar For Detroit's New QLINE Expected To Arrive Wednesday

If you drive down Woodward from about Grand Boulevard to Campus Martius, you can see the overhead lines being strung up, the rails getting completed and the stations starting to pop up. We’re getting closer to QLINE becoming a reality. The latest news is that the first streetcar from Brookville Equipment Corporation is set to arrive Wednesday, two months ahead of the initially projected timeline, according to information provided by the M1-Rail organization, the nonprofit overseeing the projec...

Track Testing To Begin On Detroit's New Streetcar This Tuesday

The Q-Line (formerly called M1-Rail) is starting to feel more like a real thing instead of a number of renderings on the internet. If you’ve been downtown, in some parts you’re seeing overhead lines go in and platforms begin to appear for future stations. Another step forward begins tomorrow when a small motorized inspection car called a “speeder” will travel on Woodward between Larned and Adams streets. The speeder, according to officials, ensures that the route is free of obstructions taki...

M-1 Rail Opening Will Be Delayed By Safety Regulation Snag

The M-1 Rail streetcar project, originally set to be operational and carrying passengers in 2016 has been delayed until spring 2017. According to project spokesmen Dan Lijana, the construction schedule has not been delayed, but the revised timeline is due to new federal safety regulations. Adherence to the regulations is required due to the fact that M-1’s funding is partially Federal, therefore it must meet new safety standards in the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-2...

M-1 Rail Releases Renderings for the New Penske Tech Center

The corner of Bethune and Custer off of Woodward is about to get a whole lot busier. Paul Childs, Chief Operation Officer of the project, said in a statement that community input for the new tech center included five recommenda...

Detroit's M-1 RAIL Streetcar Construction Is On Track, To Reach Peak In 2015

Detroit heads even further down the rails to its mass-transit future as the M-1 RAIL continues its construction even as the thermometer drops. “Working through the winter lays the groundwork that allows for our construction crews to quickly ramp up once the weather breaks,” said M-1 RAIL Chief Operating Officer Paul Childs. “Next year construction will reach its peak. We have an aggressive schedule planned that will ensure we are able to deliver the project safely and on time in 2016.” Here’...

Construction On Detroit's Streetcar Line Rolls Forward, Completes Section In Time For Parade

Construction on the M1-Rail streetcar has cleared a benchmark. Phase one in the Central Business District between Campus Martius Park and Grand Circus Park is done just in time for America’s Thanksgiving Parade and will open to traffic after the completion of the festivities. “With the exception of some minor tasks, we are done with our work in this area for the year, but will return next year for track work from State St. to Larned. Woodward Avenue within the five-block stretch between Campus...

EDITORIAL: Why Those Fantasy Detroit Transit Maps Get Us Mad (And You Should Be, Too)

Yet another fantasy Detroit transit map has come out. Following in the footsteps of other aspiring commuting enthusiasts, it has undoubtedly generated thousands of page views for the blogosphere. And it’s pretty. However, it just gets us mad. Not the design. Or the creator. Probably every single one of the creators of these maps over the years are wonderful people. They are not who we’re angry at. It’s our leadership that has for decades shared a lack of vision and the will to make anythin...
