A new pro soccer stadium for Detroit (and some speculation)

The news broke just after we recorded yesterday's show that Detroit City FC intends to build a 14,000 seat stadium in Corktown, near Michigan and 20th streets. Fletcher Sharpe, Norris Howard and I discuss what we know, what we don't, and then the pair get into a conversation speculating about the future of soccer in Detroit - and bring up the uncomfortable topic for some, MLS in Detroit. On Monday we'll know more hard details. But for now, enjoy the speculation and would love to know what you...

The Icon of Incompletion // 2023 Big Development Themes // Vacant Tall Buildings Sold

Robin Runyan from Urbanize Detroit joins us today to give a bit of an update on development stories around town and answer a listener question. * Can the Belle Isle Boathouse be saved? We discuss. * We talk about what could be Detroit’s icon of incompletion, the long-stalled Perfecting Church project at Seven Mile and Woodward. There’s a new deal to get it going, but community (and our) skepticism after 20 years of lack of progress is high. * A pair of buildings in Corktown that have sa...

Friend of the podcast Robin Runyan from Urbanize Detroit joins us to talk all things development – and a little Miguel Cabrera. 02:40 – The building with a collapsed wall at Russell and Winder will be saved, and the businesses will be able to get their stuff out – which is huge and may save some of them. 04:20 – East Warren has a series of developments happening. We discuss a lot of what’s going on: https://detroit.urbanize.city/post/looking-ahead-new-businesses-and-development-east-warr...

Putting The "City" Back In The Motor City By Supporting Small Developers w/ Brian Mulloy

Our deep-dive conversation is with Brian Mulloy. He’s doing small-scale development in the city of Detroit through his Ballet Real Estate, but with a focus on building restoration and urban spaces. His transformation of a building at Bagley and Trumbull (and subsequent development of a property few thought could be built on it behind it) not only has caught attention for its looks but the amount of hassle he had to go through to get it done. So how can Detroit support smaller devel...

Popular UFO Factory Condemned By City After Construction Crew Severely Damages Building

Corktown is a neighborhood that has been on the upswing and mentioned nationally for its historic homes, great food and bars. It’s a place that prides itself on supporting local and small businesses, and hasn’t seen the amount of large-scale residential and retail construction Midtown has. It’s a place that supports businesses like the UFO Factory bar. The UFO Factory was damaged by a cement mixer that struck the building at about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The mixer was part of construction...

The Red Dunn Kitchen Is Now Open Inside The Trumbull & Porter Hotel

Last night I had the opportunity to attend the grand opening of Red Dunn Kitchen in Corktown. The restaurant is located inside of the Trumbull & Porter Hotel. While it serves as the onsite restaurant of the hotel, you don’t need to be a guest of the hotel to dine there. The Red Dunn offers a casual atmosphere with a full bar, dining room, event space, private dining room called “The Steak Room,” and an outdoor seating area. The outdoor seating area is in the courtyard of the Trumbl...

PHOTOS: Corktown Gets A New Statue Honoring Veterans

If you look at the corner of 14th and Michigan Avenue in Corktown, you might notice something new. That’s because there’s a new statue created by the Nordin Brothers of the Detroit Design Center in the median. It’s called “Generations.” If you’re looking to figure out where it is, it’s between Slows BBQ and the CPA Building, across Michigan Avenue from the old Michigan Central Station. It’s designed to be a visual gateway to the neighborhood. The Nordin Brothers might sound familiar to...

WATCH: A Loving Look At Detroit's Corktown Neighborhood

There’s a lot going on in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. But what’s actually happening on the ground? The seven minute video above takes a little bit of a look under the hood. “Where” is the beginnings of a new video series produced by Zach Lewis. “I am originally from Philly and a lot of people I talk to from home, and out of state, have this idea that Detroit is constantly dangerous, or that it’s an undesirable place to live,” said Lewis to Daily Detroit. “I wanted to create a video that...

Snapshots Inside Corktown's Newest Noodle Shop, Ima

Detroit has a new noodle shop, and it’s debut at the end of 2016 fortunately went way better than Mariah Carey’s end to 2016. Stopping by the formed Rubbed space at 2015 Michigan Avenue, just down the way from Motor City Wine, you find a clean setup at Ima. There are more communal style tables than before, along with bar-like eating spots along two of the walls. This is a first look during a soft open, so we’re not going to be too tough. That said, there’s a lot to look forward to about this...

Have A Drink This Weekend To Help Overhaul A Park In Corktown

Having fun and doing good go hand in hand here in Detroit. One such way to get involved is this weekend, as the folks from Batch Brewing Company will be hosting a variety of Feelgood Tap beers (that’s where they donate a portion of the proceeds of every beer) to raise money for the revitalization of Dean Savage Memorial Park. The biergarten will run all this weekend and also celebrate the launch of a Patronicity fundraising campaign aimed at creating a fun, safe, and inclusive space for all re...

Compared To Other Cities, Is Detroit's Land Area Really As Massive As People Think It Is?

A reader forwarded us an interesting post from UrbanLand about Detroit’s revitalization, and the importance of adaptive reuse. Although it focuses a lot on Corktown, it’s also one of the areas that their premise concept – adaptive reuse – has been very evident. It’s a long piece, but a factoid stood out: “In terms of land mass, Detroit is a small city; of the 24 U.S. municipalities with at least 600,000 residents, Detroit is the fourth smallest, at 139 square miles (360 sq km).” There has...
